It’s unbelievable to me that in 2017 a movement still exist to respect, preserve, or defend the confederate legacy in any way. This is the biggest irony in American (quasi) political culture: A group of people that claims to have the utmost love for our country, and considers themselves patriots STILL revere a symbol of TREASON, a symbol of separatist traitors. They admire the military leaders that lead those separatist traitors into battle, and 150+ years later complain when public option turns against them, when really this should have happened a long time ago. Statues of Confederate Generals should never have been erected in the first place. State sanctioned holidays commemorating the glory of the confederacy were never appropriate, and the obsessive attachment of these symbols to “southern pride” is severely misguided. Please stop with the it’s “southern history” nonsense.
My mother’s family is originally from Mississippi & my father’s is originally from Georgia. Both sides left to south during the Great Migration like so many other Black families did during the 40’s & 50’s. As African Americans that flag, and all that it represents have nothing to do with their southern pride, roots, traditions, or culture. And I shouldn’t have to tell you why. It should go without saying. Everyone should already know that a group of people that realized they were on the verge of losing the most important culture war of all time, decided to rebel to keep their right to own other human beings in place. Why was this ever tolerated? Yet here we are.
Peace to Charlottesville, VA.
